To keep up with prices you'd need $98,798 a 16.2% rise (includes forecasts)
Your $85,000 buys what $73,129 did in July 2022. That's $11,871 of buying power gone.

After tax, $85,000 took home $65,208 in 2022–23. To match that today you'd need $75,793 take-home, and the same salary now takes home $67,600, partly thanks to the tax cuts since.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the inflation data come from?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics consumer price index (all groups, eight capital cities): the monthly CPI where published, and quarterly CPI back to 2000. Dates after the latest release use the Reserve Bank’s August 2026 forecasts and are labelled as such.
What is the Wage Price Index?
The ABS measure of how pay rates change for the same jobs over time, excluding bonuses. Comparing it with CPI shows whether wages are keeping up with prices on average.
