Frequently asked questions

Do these rates include the Medicare levy?
No. Australian residents also pay the 2% Medicare levy on their whole taxable income, unless they earn under the low-income threshold or qualify for an exemption. Foreign residents and most working holiday makers don’t pay it.
Why do foreign residents pay more tax?
They don’t get the $18,200 tax-free threshold or the low income tax offset, so tax starts from the first dollar at 30% (32.5% before 2024–25).
What is the tax-free threshold?
The first $18,200 of an Australian resident’s taxable income is tax-free. With the low income tax offset, residents pay no income tax on taxable income up to about $22,866 in 2026–27.
