Frequently asked questions
Which scale should I use?
Scale 2 if the employee is an Australian resident claiming the tax-free threshold (usually their main job). Scale 1 if they’re not claiming it. Scale 3 for foreign residents. Scales 5 and 6 for full and half Medicare levy exemptions. Scale 4 (47% or 45%) if no tax file number was provided.
Do these match the ATO tax tables?
Yes. They’re generated from the Statement of formulas for calculating amounts to be withheld (Schedule 1) and the study and training support loan formulas (Schedule 8), using the ATO’s rounding rules. They match every value in the ATO’s sample data. The ATO’s printed tables can differ by $1 above their maximum listed earnings, where a footnote method applies.
Why does HELP withholding sometimes differ by $1?
The ATO allows two methods: combined coefficients rounded once (used here, and in the ATO sample data), or rounding the tax and the loan component separately. They can differ by $1 on some earnings values.
